Subject: Hard jamming
Subject: Hard jamming
If you go to these shows and expect hard jamming all the time, then I think you may not understand this music. If you are really listening, there is plenty there to get off on.Broken Arrow has some beautiful passages.
I think people need to stop getting so friggin wasted at shows, and try to focus on listening a little more.I used to think the Dead would tone it down just to try to get the audience to chill out!

The show starts. Alligator is OK, not terrible. The Harder they come comes on, and the crowd thinks we're starting to hit the groove. Then Broken Arrow takes us a step back. Low Spark almost gets somewhere, but again, falls flat and sputters into a spacey jam. That song relies on a driving chorus, so the spacey-ness kinda ruined it. For most of the rest of the night I just sipped my beers and hoped for some harder jams to come.
There were a few aggressive members of the audience, some screamed "LETS GO!!!" and "C'MON NOW!" and I don't blame them one bit. With this bill, that venue, and that ticket price (sorry to go there, but when it's 120 face value, expectations are high! I assumed nothing less than a super-group performance. Not a super letdown)
The Dark Star was depressing because it felt like they only did that riff to get our attention again. Terrapin Station was truly rough. The drumming was SO SOFT the entire time, resulting in the song having almost no spine. (during the "Inspiration" coda–the audience SCREAMED the lyrics, finally having something to be excited about gave it a boost).
Thank god Warren saved us twice with renditions of Midnight Rider and Sunshine of Your Love. At least we could rock out to that.
I'm not a hater, folks. Love Phil, love this music, and I love the supporting casts he chooses, save for the drummer this night. But to just play song riffs followed by spacey jams is downright disrespectful to fans who paid top-dollar for the ticket.
oh yeaH, and in case I didn't feel bad enough about totally lighting my money on fire that night, Phil came out and said "What the fuck was that?" before starting his donor rap. Just icing on the cake. Even he knew how rough the night was.
Some people probably read this and are seething with rage. Probably think I'm being "disrespectful" to Phil, but the show was a total sham and this review is deserved. Peace.
